A treasured Emmerdale friendship was under strain in Tuesday (December 9)’s episode, when Lydia Dingle (Karen Blick) was left feeling decidedly unhappy with her former best mate Kim Tate (Claire King).

Lydia and Kim have always been close. Despite their employer/employee relationship the two women have enjoyed a trusting and confiding relationship over the years. Kim was the first person Lydia was able to open up to after she was raped, for example.

There have been hiccups in the friendship along the way, often caused by their difference in status. When Kim wrongly accused Sam (James Hooton) of theft, fiercely loyal Lydia found it hard to forgive her – but eventually did.

This most recent falling out isn’t too major yet, but it’s going to go on to have massive consequences for Kim in the days ahead.

It all started when Sam was forced to go cap in hand back to Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) to ask for his job back.

He had thought that Moira (Natalie J Robb) was going to offer him work at Butlers, but that turned out not to be the case so he had no option but to throw himself on Joe’s mercy – which actually worked.

Joe and Sam initially fell out after Joe gave away the fact that Sam had got Lydia a ticket to see her idol, Jason Donovan, in concert. Sadly this wasn’t entirely accurate, because Sam thought he was buying a ticket from Tracy (Amy Walsh), but it was all a scam and Tracy had no knowledge of any tickets and Sam’s money was lost.

Lydia was obviously disappointed when she found out, as she explained to Kim. She was ‘gutted’ not to be seeing Jason Donovan.

But she had other things on her mind, as tickets for the Christmas Fayre were not selling well. Plus there was the raffle to organise – and she was relying on Kim for a generous donation – ‘Anything you can do to sprinkle some Kim Tate magic.’

Kim’s contribution was hardly magical as she offered up a bottle of wine that Lydia later told Sam could be bought at Pollard (Chris Chittell)’s shop for £5.

But as soon as Lydia had gone, Kim went on her laptop and looked extremely pleased with herself. The reason why will be revealed on Thursday, and it could well have something to do with Jason Donovan and his very special guest appearance at the Woolpack.

But before that can happen, back at Wishing Well, Sam and Lydia were not in the best mood with Kim.

Lydia pointed out that sometimes Kim can be all smiles and saying she sees them as family.

Sam bitterly said that the Tates were laughing at them as they scrabbled for pennies, with the Tates spending ‘more on a poxy lunch than we spend on grub in a month.’ They agreed that ‘family doesn’t do that.’
